Oh, my God - it's alive!!
With this horrofilm cry, the listener could greet the first publication of the group FOUR FREE.
Something like Horror, CHRIS JARRETT (piano and composition), and his collleagues PASCAL GULLY (drums), JEROME FOHRER (Double Bass), and ADRIEN DENNEFELD (Guitar, Electronics) have produced a really surprising, unbent and exciting offspring of Jazz (?) to the ear, which sometimes amuses, turns us on, or makes our blood run cold. Dreamy Elegies may be hunted down by highspeed Sarabandes and Blues extracts, mixed with deconstructed patches, formed into snearing grins.
When all is said, this music has been carved rich in tempi, and with Jarrett's typical love of extremes - sometimes rough, but always frank.
Those acquainted with the solo piano versions of some of these compositions will be elated and surprised - sometimes a smacky groove joins in, but not so much for the appeal as for the fun of it.
And there are times when all breaks down into shot atoms.
Bursting drive, shrill licks on the guitar, staccato attacks, finely diced tidbits, and some surgically precise breaks let the body of this adroit Frankenstein grow. Old or new? Hard to tell - but sooner funny than shy, and sooner earnest than clumsy.
