Lyrics from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe:
Italienische Reise (1786/87), Briefe und Venetianische Epigramme (1790)

With contemporary comments from Charlotte von Stein, Ludwig Börne, Friedrich von Schiller, Karl Philipp Moritz, Johann Caspar Goethe, Karl August Böttiger, and August Kestner.

Freedom as a Stranger. Goethe escaped his birthplace at the Bohemian Karlsbad in a stagecoach on September 03, 1786, where he settled down as painter Philippe Möller in "the land, where the lemons bloom". The disguised privy councillor spent joyful months across the Italian Boot, exploring Lake Garda, Verona, Venice, Florence, Rome and Napels with his eyes, ears, nose, and mouth, which satisfied his curiosity and senses. His journey fulfilled his long cherished dreams.

With Goethe's diary in their hands, Ulrich Tukur and Ulrike Kriener feel this poetic dream. The music ensemble Quadro Nuevo is standing at quiet street corners and noisy public places, watching the travellers and following their thoughts. Old Canzoni and melodies from an almost forgotten Italy wake up the vision of the south. Goethe's Arkadia: A land that promises mediterranean idyll and a sumptuous way of life until today. It tastes like dwell and leaving, wine, olives, a fallen world empire and ravishing Italianità.

A co-production with the Bayerischen Rundfunk Bayern 4 Klassik.
