| He wanders the frontiers, an artist in sound, a musical personality with a universal range. More a 'musician on the drums' than a conventional Jazz drummer, this Cosmopolitan of Rhythm pushes the limits of style and category with a calculated lightness and ease.
For the CD 'IMAGO-A Modern Suite', he has exchanged the role of time-keeping drummer with that of open-minded bandleader and, with his quartet 'Zakedy Music', sets out to hunt for new territory. IMAGO is a voyage of discovery that surprises and delights. Ancient longings and memories, transitions and fragments of history, as well as personal experiences - Bittner forms the 11 songs on a solid foundation of musical tradition and presents them in the three part structure of a suite, sensually yet wittily performed by IMAGO. References to traditional forms are presented not as a nostalgic retrospective, but rather as a useful principle to inspire stylistic freedom in a 'Jazz Without Borders', where things of the past are transformed into things of the world of today. And befitting this approach, Walter Bittner considers jazz not so much a musical style as an operating principle.
His compositions and arrangements, which make up the greater part of IMAGO, are masterly interpreted by the members of 'Zakedy Music'. With drums and electronics Walter Bittner sets the direction of each musical pathway. In live performance, he blends edited samples from his laptop with nuanced cymbal sounds and fine brush and stickwork so that the digital pre-recordings disintegrate imperceptably and electronic and acoustic melt together into a subtle rhythmic carpet of sound.
Onto this foundation, which he builds with bassist Uli Fiedler, Daniel Eberhard (piano, accordion) and Stephan Holstein (saxophone, clarinet, bass clarinet) playfully superimpose hypnotically beautiful melodies and improvisations. The four musicians guide this exciting Sound-Arithmetic to a non-conformist unity.
Bittner's instinct for artful dramaturgic development and the mastery of his instruments form the basis of his music.
'When I choose a drummer to collaborate with I always look more for his feel than his technique. Walter Bittner both feels time in the most beautiful way and has the technique to make you feel it, too.' Chico Freeman
The two vocal songs - in the singer-songwriter tradition - function as 'Interphases' and lend IMAGO further authenticity. 'Walter is a fine talent both in his writing and playing and what a surprise to find out he can sing too. Wonderful music.' Sheila Jordan
With IMAGO Walter Bittner's Zakedy Music has succeeded in a very personal statement. Clever and masterly performed, - an intense musical journey through time. Dive in!
