Joel Locher

We all secretly know the opinion that bassists are not bandleaders, bassists are accessories of a band, a soloist, bassists do not create works. That this is not the case is already shown by numerous releases on GLM Music – Sven Faller, D.D. Lowka are to be mentioned here.

Joel Locher comes from a musical family – his mother an opera singer, his father a bass player with the Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra. So it is not surprising that the young Joel Locher first took the path to classical music, studied classical double bass at the Stuttgart University and also played with the Stuttgart Philharmonic. Already at the age of 16, the world of jazz opened up to him through musician friends. Early participation in jam sessions and first concerts laid the foundation for his further path as a jazz bassist.

Joel Locher was born in Stuttgart in 1982 and started taking piano and cello lessons at the age of 5. In 1994 he received his first double bass lessons from his father. He became interested in jazz at the age of ten. Various prizes at Jugend Musiziert followed. Already as a young student he began to study double bass with Prof. Ulrich Lau at the University of Music in Stuttgart. From 1998 to 2001 Joel Locher was principal double bass in the Stuttgart Youth Chamber Orchestra and in 2001 and 2002 he was a member of the Festival Orchestra of the International Bach Academy Stuttgart. In 2004-2005 he was an intern with the Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra.During all these years he became increasingly involved with jazz and performed in a wide variety of formations.
