So the pianist moved to New York, the Mecca of all artistic free spirits, and gathered the band BlackMudSound around him\u2014a loose \u201cfoyer des arts\u201d that, at the time of the recording of \u201cScoop,\u201d was home to a group of improvisation-loving musicians, including Greg Osby and Bobby Watson on alto sax, Terri Lyne Carrington on drums, Anthony Cox, Zaf Zapha, and James Genus on bass, as well as the mesmerizing voices of Salif Keita, Elisabeth Kontomanou, and Thomas Grimes. \u201cScoop\u201d has a crisp groove and delicate sensitivity, sometimes nervous and excited, sometimes elegantly styled. The themes are consistently pop-like and catchy, the rhythms insistent and gripping. Kreusch thus builds bridges between cool jazz and black poetry, between urban funk and Afro-pop.
