A smoky bar, rainy April weather or a scene from a French black and white film – on their new album “Am Ende der Nacht”, the trio led by pianist Kilian Kemmer tells of people, faded memories and marginal notes of everyday life in eleven musical miniatures.Strong melodies and underlying multi-layered harmonies characterize this music. This is unpretentious chamber jazz, reduced to the essentials.

With Thomas Stabenow on bass, formerly professor of bass in Mannheim and one of the most sought-after bassists in Europe, and the multi-award-winning Julian Fau on drums, they explore the catchy themes and then take a journey into the poetic unknown. The musicians create particularly intense soundscapes with their guest Matthieu Bordenave. The saxophonist is one of the “outstanding figures of contemporary European jazz” (BR Klassik) and shines with his playing on the compositions “Durch die Nacht” and “Fabi 43”.

Inspired by Bach and Federico Mompou, the idea of variation plays a central role, explains Kilian Kemmer:

“When I improvise, I first try to stay very close to it, to develop the central idea further, and then see where we are carried … I imagine it a bit like those good, rare nights when you drift from bar to bar without much intention, until the end of the night. And then you sit by the Isar and wait until the sun rises.”

The music is so casual and unassuming that it appeals not only to the die-hard jazz community, but also to a diverse audience. Kemmer is often told: “I don’t really like jazz, but I love listening to your music! It’s so sensitive and relaxing.” One of the greatest compliments for Kemmer is when his music is also liked by people who are not die-hard jazz fans. “I don’t want to impress anyone – I’m really interested in the beauty of the music, and if other people like it, then I’m happy.”

About the musicians:

Kilian Kemmer is a pianist and composer. Jazzpodium writes about him: “He leads his music sometimes minimalistically, sometimes lyrically, but then again with a lot of energy, back to the roots, to storytelling, to forgetting time, to euphony, to real life beyond all non-real time.”

Matthieu Bordenave is a saxophonist and professor at the conservatory in Innsbruck. With “The Blue Land”, he has just released his second highly acclaimed album on ECM. BR-Klassik describes him as “one of the outstanding figures in contemporary European jazz. His tone paintings are timeless images of enchanting beauty and power.”

Double bassist Thomas Stabenow is one of the greats of the German jazz scene, having played with Johnny Griffin, Lee Konitz and Billy Cobham, among others, recorded over 30 albums on his own label “Bassic Sound” and given concerts with Stan Getz, Eartha Kitt, Chaka Khan and Al Jarreau.

Drummer Julian Fau is a three-time winner of the “Bruno-Rother-Jazz-Wettbewerb”, was a member of the Bundesjazzorchester, won the WDR-Nachwuchs-Jazzpreis with this orchestra, came 2nd in the “Neuer Deutscher Jazzpreis” with the Johannes Ludwig Quartett and 2nd in the “Future Sounds” competition of the Leverkusen Jazz Festival with Ensemble 11.
